MagSafe Car Phone Holders FAQ.
Everything you need to know about MagSafe and magnetic phone holders — charging vs. non-charging, magnet strength, phone compatibility, and cases.
A MagSafe car phone holder is a magnetic mount that uses Apple's MagSafe ring of magnets — or the Qi2 Magnetic Power Profile standard based on it — to snap your iPhone or compatible Android phone into place on your dashboard with a single motion. Unlike a clamp-style holder that grips around the phone, a MagSafe holder holds the phone purely through magnetic force, so mounting and dismounting is completely one-handed and cable-free.
ProClip MagSafe holders pair with a vehicle-specific mounting base that clips into the existing seams of your dashboard without drilling, giving you a rigid, rattle-free platform for the magnetic holder rather than a flexible vent clip or suction cup arm.
A MagSafe charging holder contains a wireless charging coil behind the magnet ring. When your phone connects to it, the holder simultaneously holds the phone and delivers wireless power — no cable needed at the phone itself. The MagicMount Charge Elite (up to 15W) and MagicMount Charge Pro (up to 25W) are ProClip's charging holders.
A non-charging magnetic holder like the ProClip MagnePro contains only magnets and no charging coil, so it holds the phone just as securely — and in fact more securely — but does not charge it wirelessly. The practical trade-off between these two types is explained in detail in the magnet strength question below.
This is the most important technical distinction in the MagSafe holder category, and it comes down to physics. A MagSafe or Qi2 charging holder must house both a wireless charging coil and a magnet ring inside a single puck-shaped head. The charging coil occupies the center of that space, which limits how large, how thick, and ultimately how strong the surrounding magnets can physically be. Apple's MagSafe specification also intentionally moderates the magnet arrangement to prioritize precise coil-to-coil alignment for efficient power transfer rather than raw mechanical grip force. The result is a hold that is adequate for most normal driving but can be overcome by a heavy bump, hard braking, or the added weight of a large Pro Max or Ultra-class phone.
A non-charging magnetic holder like the ProClip MagnePro has no coil at all. The entire face of the holder is dedicated to high-grade neodymium magnets with no engineering trade-off between charging performance and grip strength. Without a coil competing for space, the magnet array can be significantly larger and more powerful than anything a charging holder can achieve at the same physical size. This is why drivers who prioritize an unbreakable grip — particularly those with large or heavy phones, rugged cases, or rough daily driving conditions — consistently choose a non-charging holder and run a USB-C cable separately for power when needed.
ProClip MagSafe-compatible holders work with any device that has a built-in MagSafe magnet ring, a Qi2 Magnetic Power Profile magnet ring, or a compatible magnetic case or adapter ring attached. Natively compatible devices include all MagSafe iPhones from iPhone 12 through the latest models — excluding the iPhone 16e, which ships without built-in MagSafe magnets — and Qi2-compatible Android phones including select Google Pixel and Samsung Galaxy models.
Any phone that does not have built-in magnets can be made fully compatible by adding a Magnetic Adapter Ring — a thin adhesive neodymium ring that bonds to the back of the phone or the inside of a case, creating the magnetic connection needed for secure mounting and wireless charging alignment.
The iPhone 16e does not include built-in MagSafe magnets. Apple omitted the magnet ring from the 16e to position it as the entry-level model in the iPhone 16 lineup, which means it will not magnetically snap to any MagSafe or Qi2 holder on its own, and a standard MagSafe charger will not deliver 15W fast charging to it.
However, the iPhone 16e does support standard Qi wireless charging. To use it with a ProClip MagnePro or any MagicMount wireless charging holder, you need to add a Magnetic Adapter Ring to the back of the phone, or use a MagSafe-compatible case that includes its own built-in magnet ring. Either solution restores full magnetic snap-on attachment and enables Qi2-standard wireless charging alignment through compatible charging holders.
Yes, with the right case. MagSafe holders work best with cases that contain their own built-in MagSafe or Qi2 magnet ring, because those cases contribute additional magnetic strength on top of the magnets already in the phone. A MagSafe-compatible case on an iPhone 12 or later effectively produces a stronger, more reliable hold than using the bare phone alone.
Standard thin silicone or TPU cases without magnets work in most normal driving conditions but do slightly reduce grip because the case material sits between the phone's internal magnets and the holder. Cases over approximately 3mm thick, wallet cases with metal card slots, cases with embedded metal plates, and cases with kickstands can significantly reduce or fully block the magnetic connection. If your current case is not MagSafe compatible, a Magnetic Adapter Ring bonded to the inside or outside of the case resolves the issue completely.
The right choice depends on what you prioritize most. Choose a wireless charging holder — the MagicMount Charge Elite at 15W or the MagicMount Charge Pro at 25W — if your primary goal is keeping your battery topped up on every drive without ever plugging a cable into the phone. For most daily commutes and highway drives, the magnetic hold is reliable and the cable-free convenience is genuinely useful every single day.
Choose the non-charging MagnePro if your top priority is the most secure hold possible — particularly if you drive on rough roads or construction routes, carry a large or heavy phone like an iPhone Pro Max or Galaxy Ultra, use a thick or rugged case, or simply want the peace of mind of knowing your phone will not come off no matter what the road does. The MagnePro's full-face neodymium magnet array produces a grip that no charging holder can match. Many drivers use both approaches: a MagnePro for the strongest everyday hold, with a USB-C cable plugged directly into the phone's port when charging is needed.
The most common reason MagSafe car holders drop phones is not weak magnets — it is mount movement. A vent clip or suction cup arm that flexes even a few millimeters under a bump, hard braking, or continuous road vibration physically breaks the magnetic connection between the phone and the holder in real time. A phone does not need to travel far to disconnect from a magnetic holder; even a slight angular shift is enough to reduce the effective contact area between the magnet rings and allow the phone to begin peeling away.
A ProClip vehicle-specific dashboard base eliminates this problem entirely. Each base is precision-engineered to clip rigidly into the existing factory seams of your specific car or truck dashboard — no flex, no pivot arm, and no adhesive that can creep or degrade over time. The MagSafe holder screws directly to this rigid base, which means the magnetic interface between the holder and your phone is completely isolated from road shock and vibration. The result is that the full rated strength of the magnets is working at all times, not only when the road happens to be smooth.
