iPhone Car Mounts FAQ.
Everything you need to know about ProClip iPhone car mounts — MagSafe compatibility, charging speeds, case compatibility, and how to find the perfect fit for your iPhone and vehicle.
ProClip offers four iPhone car mount options, all of which attach to the same vehicle-specific dashboard base that snaps into your car's factory trim seams without drilling, suction cups, or adhesive.
The MagnePro is a non-charging MagSafe-compatible magnetic holder that snaps your iPhone into place one-handed using a full-face neodymium magnet array — the strongest-gripping option in the lineup. The MagicMount Charge Elite delivers up to 15W Qi2 MagSafe wireless charging while holding your iPhone magnetically. The MagicMount Charge Pro delivers up to 25W via Qi2.2 — the fastest wireless iPhone car charging available, optimised for iPhone 17 series. A universal adjustable cradle holder is also available for any iPhone in any case, with no magnets required.
All holder types are compatible with the same ProClip mounting base. Use the Vehicle Product Finder to identify the right base for your car and the right holder for your iPhone.
MagSafe — Apple's built-in ring of magnets for attaching and aligning accessories — is included in every iPhone from the iPhone 12 series onward, with one exception. The full list of MagSafe-enabled iPhones includes the complete iPhone 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, and 17 families across all standard, mini, Plus, Air, Pro, and Pro Max variants.
The iPhone 16e is the only exception — Apple removed the MagSafe magnet ring from the 16e as a cost-reduction measure. All other models in the iPhone 12-through-17 lineup snap natively to any ProClip MagSafe-compatible holder straight out of the box, with no adapter or special case required. See the dedicated iPhone 16e question below for how to use it with a magnetic holder.
The iPhone 16e does not include a built-in MagSafe magnet ring. Apple omitted it from the 16e to hit a lower price point, which means it will not snap to any MagSafe or Qi2 magnetic holder on its own, and a standard MagSafe charger will not deliver 15W fast charging to it. The 16e does support standard Qi wireless charging.
There are three ways to use a ProClip holder with an iPhone 16e. Add a Magnetic Adapter Ring to the back of the phone — a thin adhesive neodymium ring that restores full magnetic snap-on mounting and Qi2-aligned wireless charging. Use a MagSafe-compatible iPhone 16e case with a built-in magnet ring. Or use the ProClip universal cradle-style holder, which grips any iPhone mechanically with no magnets required at all.
iPhone Pro Max models are the largest and heaviest iPhones Apple makes — over 7 inches tall and weighing more than 7 ounces — which places the greatest demand on any car phone holder, especially under braking and on rough roads.
For maximum security, ProClip recommends the MagnePro non-charging magnetic holder for Pro Max iPhones. Because it contains no wireless charging coil, its entire face is dedicated to high-grade neodymium magnets that produce a noticeably stronger grip than any charging holder at the same size. Drivers with Pro Max iPhones in rugged cases on rough commutes consistently report preferring this combination — adding a USB-C cable to the phone's port when charging is needed.
If wireless charging is the priority, the MagicMount Charge Pro at 25W Qi2.2 delivers the maximum wireless charge speed the iPhone 17 Pro Max supports. In both cases, the ProClip rigid dashboard base is what makes the critical difference for large, heavy iPhones — eliminating the flex that causes Pro Max phones to peel away from any magnetic holder on a bump or hard stop.
Choose a wireless charging mount — the MagicMount Charge Elite at 15W or the MagicMount Charge Pro at 25W — if the priority is keeping your iPhone topped up on every drive without ever plugging a cable into the phone. Your iPhone snaps on and charging starts automatically, every time you get in the car. For standard iPhones and Plus models on moderate roads, the MagSafe hold on a charging mount is reliable for daily use.
Choose the non-charging MagnePro if the priority is the most secure grip possible — especially for iPhone Pro Max models, thick or rugged cases, rough road conditions, or anyone who wants the confidence of knowing the phone will not come off under any circumstances. The MagnePro's full-face neodymium magnets produce a grip that no charging holder can match. A popular approach is to use the MagnePro with a USB-C cable plugged directly into the iPhone's port — combining maximum magnetic hold with full wired fast-charging speed simultaneously.
The MagicMount Charge Elite delivers up to 15W for all MagSafe iPhones from iPhone 12 through iPhone 17 — the standard Qi2 fast-charge rate Apple supports across the entire MagSafe lineup. The MagicMount Charge Pro delivers up to 25W using the Qi2.2 standard for the latest iPhones that support that wattage, including the iPhone 17 series — approximately five times faster than first-generation Qi1 wireless car chargers that topped out at 5W to 7.5W for iPhones.
Both holders include a USB-C cable and 12V cigarette lighter adapter in the box, and can be powered from any USB-C port supporting USB Power Delivery at 20W or higher. The Charge Elite adapter includes a second USB-C output port so you can charge a second device — a passenger's phone, wireless earbuds, or a tablet — from the same adapter simultaneously.
Yes — the best experience depends on which holder and case you have. MagSafe-compatible iPhone cases with a built-in magnet ring — from Apple and brands like OtterBox MagSafe, Spigen MagFit, and Peak Design — actively strengthen the magnetic connection on top of the magnets already inside your iPhone, giving you the strongest and most reliable snap-on hold of any combination.
Standard thin silicone or clear cases without magnets work in most driving conditions but slightly reduce grip because the case sits between the iPhone's internal MagSafe ring and the holder. Cases that can significantly reduce or block magnetic hold include: thick protective cases over approximately 3mm, battery cases, metal or carbon-fibre cases, wallet cases with metal card slots, and cases with rigid kickstands. For any of these, a Magnetic Adapter Ring bonded to the inside of the case restores full performance. The ProClip universal cradle holder accommodates any iPhone case regardless of thickness or material — no adapter needed.
The rated wattage — 15W or 25W — is the maximum under ideal conditions. Three things routinely reduce it in real-world car use.
The charge curve. MagSafe charges your iPhone fastest when battery level is low, typically delivering peak power from 0% to around 50%. iOS then deliberately steps charging down as the battery fills — slowing noticeably above 80% and tapering to a trickle from 80% to 100%. This is intentional battery-health management built into every iPhone, not a flaw in the charger. If charging feels slow at a high battery level, the charge curve is working exactly as Apple designed it to.
Heat and thermal throttling. Wireless charging generates more heat than wired charging because inductive energy transfer is less efficient. When iPhone temperature exceeds Apple's internal threshold, iOS reduces or pauses wireless charging automatically — you may see a Thermally Limited Charging notification. Running GPS navigation at full screen brightness while charging is the most common trigger, because the display, processor, and wireless coil all generate heat simultaneously. A vent-mounted wireless charger that blows warm air directly onto the back of the iPhone accelerates this significantly — another reason a dashboard-mounted ProClip holder delivers more consistent charging than a vent clip.
Coil alignment. MagSafe fast charging requires the iPhone's internal coil to sit precisely over the holder's charging coil. Any flex, tilt, or vibration in the mount that shifts the phone even a few millimeters off-centre reduces wattage in real time. A rigid ProClip dashboard base that locks into the factory trim seams of your vehicle keeps alignment consistent on every road surface — where a flexible vent clip cannot.
Vent clips create two problems that directly undermine MagSafe iPhone holders. The first is movement. A vent clip pivots, flexes, and vibrates as you drive. MagSafe relies on face-to-face coil contact to hold at full strength — any angular shift reduces the effective contact area between the magnet rings and lowers grip force in real time. On a sharp corner, a pothole, or under hard braking, that reduced grip is often enough for a heavy iPhone Pro Max to separate from the holder entirely.
The second problem is airflow. Vents direct conditioned air straight onto the back of your iPhone. In winter, hot air from the blower triggers Apple's Thermally Limited Charging mode sooner, reducing wireless charging speed. In summer, cold air can block cabin cooling and create thermal instability. Vent clips also stress fragile plastic louvers that were never designed to bear the weight of a smartphone — louver damage on modern vehicles can be costly to repair.
A ProClip vehicle-specific dashboard base clips rigidly into the existing factory trim seams of your exact car or truck — no pivot arm, no suction pad, no parts that loosen over time. The MagSafe holder mounts directly to this base, well away from vent airflow. The result is zero flex under any driving condition, full MagSafe grip on every road surface, and consistent wireless charging alignment every time you place your iPhone. Use the Product Finder to find the exact base for your year, make, and model.
Installation takes under five minutes with no tools for the mounting base, no drilling, no adhesive, and no professional help required. The ProClip system has two independent parts you select separately.
Part one — the vehicle-specific mounting base — clips into the factory trim seams of your specific car or truck dashboard using firm hand pressure alone. ProClip includes step-by-step instructions matched to your exact year, make, and model with every order. The base slides or snaps into a trim gap near the centre stack, locks mechanically against the surrounding trim structure, and stays put regardless of heat or vibration. Nothing is drilled, glued, or permanently changed in your vehicle.
Part two — the iPhone holder — attaches to the base with four Phillips screws. For the MagicMount Charge Elite or Charge Pro, route the included USB-C cable through the integrated cable management clips on the back of the holder and connect to the included 12V adapter or any 20W USB-C port. From that point on, every drive is one motion — hold your iPhone near the holder and MagSafe snaps it into alignment automatically. When you upgrade your iPhone, only the holder needs to change. When you change vehicles, only the base needs to change. Find your exact match at proclipusa.com/pages/product-finder.
