Car Phone Holders FAQ.
Everything you need to know about ProClip car phone holders — types, compatibility, wireless charging, and how to find the right fit for your phone and vehicle.
A car phone holder is a mount that secures your smartphone inside your vehicle so you can use navigation, take hands-free calls, and manage music without ever picking up your phone. In most U.S. states, holding a phone while driving is illegal and carries significant fines — a properly mounted holder keeps you legal, focused, and safe.
ProClip's car phone holders are part of a two-part system: a vehicle-specific mounting base that snaps into your dashboard seams without drilling, combined with a phone holder designed for your exact smartphone. The result is a rock-solid, rattle-free setup that looks and feels factory-installed rather than an afterthought stuck to your windshield with a suction cup.

ProClip offers three main categories of phone holder, all of which attach to the same ProClip dashboard mounting base system.
Cradle-style holders use adjustable side arms to clamp around the phone's edges — a universally compatible option that works with any phone, any brand, and most case thicknesses. Ideal if you switch phones frequently or share a car with someone who uses a different phone.
Magnetic non-charging holders — like the MagnePro — use a high-strength neodymium magnet array to snap MagSafe iPhones, Qi2 Android phones, or any phone with a magnetic adapter ring into place instantly with one hand. No clamping, no fumbling.
Wireless charging magnetic holders — the MagicMount Charge Elite at 15W Qi2 and the MagicMount Charge Pro at 25W Qi2.2 — combine one-touch magnetic mounting with simultaneous fast wireless charging, so your phone mounts and starts charging in a single motion.
A cradle holder physically grips your phone using adjustable spring-loaded arms that press against the phone's frame. Mounting requires spreading the arms and positioning the phone, then releasing. Cradles are universally compatible with virtually any phone and any case because they rely on physical contact rather than magnets — a reliable choice if you use a thick, rugged, or non-magnetic case, or if you are unsure whether your phone has MagSafe or Qi2 magnets built in.
A magnetic holder uses a ring of neodymium magnets to snap the phone into place instantly with one hand and release just as fast. There is no clamping, no arm adjustment, and no fumbling. The phone snaps on and snaps off. Magnetic holders require that your phone has built-in MagSafe or Qi2 magnets, or that you attach a thin Magnetic Adapter Ring to the back of the phone or case.
For most modern iPhones (12 and later) and current Android flagships with Qi2, magnetic is the faster, cleaner, and more satisfying daily experience. For older phones, large rugged cases, or maximum universal compatibility, the cradle is the dependable choice.
Yes — and the answer depends on which holder type you choose. Cradle-style holders accommodate phones with or without a case, including moderately thick protective cases. The adjustable side arms expand to fit a range of widths, so most phones in everyday protective cases clip in securely.
For magnetic holders, best performance comes from MagSafe-compatible or Qi2-compatible cases that contain a built-in magnet ring — these actually strengthen the magnetic connection on top of the magnets already inside the phone. Standard thin silicone or TPU cases without magnets work in most driving conditions but slightly reduce grip because the case material sits between the phone's internal magnets and the holder.
Cases that can reduce or block magnetic hold include: cases over approximately 3mm thick, metal or carbon-fibre cases, wallet cases with metal card slots, and cases with embedded kickstands. For any of these, a Magnetic Adapter Ring bonded to the inside or outside of the case fully restores the magnetic connection — no need to change cases.
ProClip phone holders are compatible with virtually every smartphone on the market. Adjustable cradle holders work with any phone regardless of brand or model — iPhone, Samsung Galaxy, Google Pixel, Motorola, OnePlus, or anything else — with or without a case.
Magnetic holders natively support all MagSafe iPhones from iPhone 12 through the latest models, Qi2-compatible Android phones including select Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel models, and any phone fitted with a Magnetic Adapter Ring. The iPhone 16e is an exception: Apple omitted the MagSafe magnet ring from the 16e, so it requires a Magnetic Adapter Ring or a MagSafe-compatible case to work with magnetic holders.

Some do. ProClip offers two wireless charging holders in its lineup. The MagicMount Charge Elite delivers up to 15W Qi2 fast wireless charging to MagSafe iPhones and Qi2 Android phones. The MagicMount Charge Pro delivers up to 25W via the Qi2.2 standard — approximately five times faster than a basic Qi 1 charger — for the latest Qi2.2-compatible phones including iPhone 17, Pixel 10 Pro, and Galaxy S25.
Both holders combine magnetic snap-on mounting with simultaneous wireless power — your phone mounts and starts charging in a single motion with no cable at the phone. The MagnePro and cradle-style holders do not include wireless charging, but both are fully compatible with a USB-C cable plugged directly into the phone's port for wired charging while mounted.

The fundamental difference is engineering intent. A cheap universal mount is designed to fit as many vehicles and phones as possible at the lowest possible cost — which means compromises everywhere: suction cups that lose grip in heat, vent clips that wobble and stress fragile louvers, adhesive pads that leave residue, and plastic that flexes on every bump. The result is constant low-level frustration with a mount that was never truly designed for your car or your phone.
ProClip's system is purpose-built from two precision-engineered components. The mounting base is machine-tooled for your exact year, make, and model, snapping into the factory trim seams of your dashboard with a solid mechanical connection that cannot loosen, flex, or fall off. The phone holder is matched to your specific phone model or built to the Qi2 and MagSafe standards with high-grade neodymium magnets and quality-tested plastics.
Drivers consistently describe ProClip mounts as feeling factory-fitted — zero rattle, zero wobble, zero dropped phones — and ProClip has been engineering precision vehicle mounts in Sweden since 2003 with over 25,000 five-star reviews to back it up.
Yes — and this is one of the most practical advantages of the ProClip two-part system. The mounting base and the phone holder are two separate, independent components. If you change vehicles, you simply purchase a new mounting base for the new car. Your existing phone holder attaches directly to the new base without any modification or additional cost.
The same logic works in reverse: if you upgrade your phone but keep the same car, you replace only the holder and keep the same base already installed in your dashboard. Each component is purchased and swapped independently, which means the long-term cost of ownership is significantly lower than buying an entirely new mount every time your vehicle or phone changes.
